During the Meeting of the Governing Council on Tuesday, April 27, the Vice President of the Republic Epsy Campbell announced that the Footprint of the Future program is taking its first successful steps.

The initiative, announced last December, consists of planting 200,000 trees in nine cantons in the northern part of the country through “footprint adoptions”. The program aims to confront the threat of biodiversity loss and contribute to the generation of green jobs and aid in the economic recovery from the crisis caused by the pandemic.

Constructora Herrera SA and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Costa Rica have made donations to the project.

Constructora Herrera SA gave a contribution of more than $8 thousand, which will allow the planting and maintenance for five years of more than 500 trees. For its part, the Chinese Embassy made a donation of $32,000, which will allow the planting and maintenance of 2,000 trees.

There are fifteen private companies as well as other diplomatic missions who have also expressed interest in joining the initiative in the coming days.

This project is expected to aid in the capture of carbon dioxide, protection of water resources, provision of food and the generation of approximately 200 direct jobs and 700 indirect beneficiaries. In addition, it is part of efforts to increase the country's forest coverage to 60% by 2030.

“Footprint of the Future is an inheritance that we are leaving to the new generations. Having donations for this program means the possibility of materializing the decarbonization plan in a commitment to the present. It is an ethical way of commemorating the bicentennial because the aspiration is for this program to be a central element within the country objectives that we are developing, ”said Vice President Campbell.

To acquire a fingerprint, donations can be made on the website fingerprint.cr. For $ 15, a tree will be planted.

Donations can also be made through SINPE mobile at 8959-4255.

This project is developed by the Vice Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the National Forest Financing Fund (FONAFIFO), the Banco Ambiental Foundation (FUNBAM), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN).

In addition, the project seeks partners for volunteering through educational centers and organized ectors of civil society. To join the initiative, you can write to the email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
